The Problem

If we look at the current landscape of Indian Education System, the focus is completely on attaining regress academic knowledge. There is a lot of rote learning. Schools are shaping their classes for high test scores leading to a lot of stress and anxiety among children.

No doubt, the goal of education and of schools is to build cognitive abilities like reading, maths, science etc. However the question is -

What learning outcomes are truly relevant for our children to succeed in the 21st century?

The current system is completely knowledge based and it's going to be a big challenge 30 years from now if we do not change the way we teach our kids today.

It’s very important for us to ponder upon now- Are our kids really ready for the future?

Where are our kids lagging behind as compared to their counterparts in other parts of the world?

Do our kids have the Creative Thinking, Innovation and risk-taking capabilities to solve the next generation of problems?

There are certain set of Thinking skills like Imagination, Perseverance, Envisioning, Observation etc. that needs to be inculcated in children as they are growing and this is what is missing in our old knowledge based education system.

So, what is the solution to it? How to inculcate such Thinking Skills in children?

The Solution

These are the skills that will really prepare our children for life beyond schools and equip them to succeed in their lives. We call these skills as ‘Habits of Mind’. Unfortunately, this is something which is rarely addressed anywhere in the current education system. Hence, we propose to explicitly woven these skills into the current system.

Little Art Studio aims to setup low cost creative studio/spaces in schools offering ‘Habits of Mind’ (Thinking Skills) Programmes for the children using the medium of Visual Art & Design.

We offer a continuously evolving creative Curriculum based on Studio Thinking Framework (a research based analytical framework developed by Project Zero at Harvard Graduate School of Education) and Design Thinking.

A Studio is a very informal setup, not like a regular classroom. It has a completely different feel to it, encouraging more peer to peer interaction and collaboration.

Studio follows Import paradigm which focuses on using knowledge right now in a serious way for a complex and significant endeavour rather than traditional classroom teaching which is based on export paradigm, where the focus is on warehousing the knowledge for future use. Hence, Making is the centre of entire Studio experience.

The Studio Thinking Framework proposes the 4 Studio Structures (the horizontals) that work in integration with the 8 studio habits (the verticals) to foster an apprentice/master-craftsman relation between student and teacher.

Why Arts?

"The real product of art education is not the work of art, but the child."

It’s the process of making an art that matters the most rather that the final Product.

Art Lets the child develop his own opinions & value other’s opinions.

It Helps understanding and expressing our emotional self.

Art rooms provide an environment to children to think freely & experimenting with their ideas without the fear of failure.

There is A Hidden Curriculum that is actually the real curriculum offering the Real Benefits of visual art education.

It Fosters our visual - spatial abilities & observation power. We are able to really see things, instead of just Looking at them.

Science also needs Arts- e.g. NASA can collect the data with its scientific researches but you need to design the data to present it and understand it clearly and easily.

Arts is like An antidote to exam system as there is no right or wrong answer in the art room. Therefore more and more countries are moving from STEM to STEAM.

It’s a way to help us tackle the increasing anxiety among children. Science, law and business are necessary to sustain life, but Art is what we stay alive for!
